Town of De Kalb, NY

De Kalb is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, USA. Our population was 2,434 at the 2010 census. The town is named after American general Baron de Kalb, a German officer serving under George Washington.

The Town of De Kalb is in the southwest part of the county and is southwest of the Village of Canton.

Settlement began in June 1803 when the first settlement party arrived, led by Judge William Cooper of Cooperstown, New York. The town was organized in 1806. De Kalb was one of the original ten towns of the county. In 1825, the part of De Kalb North West of Beaver Creek was taken to be part of the Town of De Peyster. In 1830, the Southeastern corner of De Kalb was made part of the Town of Hermon.

Speech for the Minutemen Dedication.

250 years ago at this very time our Minutemen were actively engage in forcing the British Regulars back to Boston.
Today is an important anniversary in our country’s history. These events as with many such events are surrounded with much legend and lore. Today I’d like to move beyond the legends and look at what lead Isaac Stacy and Asa Sprague to muster to support their community.
The Minutemen were members of the Massachusetts colonial militia. All men of a certain age in the colony were required to do annual training and be available at a minute’s notice in case of public emergencies in their community.
Community you say? Why not say America. Well because the idea of an independent country was far from the minds of these early patriots 250 years ago. Did Paul Revere and the others warn, “The British are Coming.” Actually no, the cry was most likely, “The Regulars are coming.” For in April 1775 all colonist still considered themselves British.
It was the Regular British soldiers who were coming to impose a series of onerous Executive orders from Massachusetts Governor Wade on the local communities. The           governor had tried to dissolve the colonial legislature. The colonial legislature had retreated to Concord where they continued to meet in defiance of Governor Wade.
A few days earlier Governor Wade had sent the regulars to confiscate the militia supplies that were stored at the Sommerville arsenal. He intended to also confiscate the arms stored at the Concord and Worcester arsenals. He was thought to have signed arrest warrants for John Hancock and Samuel Adams as leaders of the legislature.
Paul Revere and William Dawes were sent from Boston to warn the citizens.  The sea that the British were crossing in the famous poem was actually the Charles River a half mile from the ocean. Dawes went the long way by land over Boston Neck and Revere rowed across the Charles River.

They both began to warn the citizens of the danger. Soon a network of some 40 people were spreading the word. Paul Revere was arrested outside Lexington but Dawes escaped to make it to Concord by jumping a fence on his horse. The citizens of Concord had already emptied their arsenal hiding arms in various places to avoid confiscation.
1.      The alarm was probably raised for our patriots in Worcester County by Israel Bissell who traveled further west than any other to raise the alarm. We all know about the Battle on Lexington green. Where 8 patriots were killed by a large British force at dawn on the morning of April 19th. The first to fall in the American Revolution.
2.      The British Regulars moved on to Concord by 10 AM where they broke into small groups to look for the hidden arms. A small force was confronted by a large group of Minutemen at the Old North Bridge in Concord. The British were forced to retreat to their main company. As this happened Minutemen were pouring in from surrounding counties adding to the colonial forces.
3.      Outnumbered the British regulars began their retreat to Boston. They were harried along the way by an ever-larger group of Minutemen.
4.      The Regulars were forced back into Boston and the siege of Boston began. Some where in this mass were our patriots 20-year-old Isaac Stacy and 32 year old Asa Sprague. Did they realize the importance of their actions that day? Probably not for historical importance is often formed in hindsight.
5.      Yet we here today owe these men a deep sense of gratitude. Had they not stood up when their community called, we might not be living in the United States today.

For anyone wishing to have their water shut-off or turned-on here in the hamlet, must complete a request application. The application can be found here on the town's website under news/info, general information. Once completed, submit to the town clerk. You can also stop in and complete an application at the clerk's office.

Clerk’s office hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 7:30am to 12:30pm, Wednesday & Thursday 12:30pm to 6:30pm. A current Rabies Certificate must be presented at the time of licensing.
It is $5 for a spayed/neutered dog and
$10.50 for un-spayed/un-neutered dog.
